Original illustration is a hand-coloured engraving by William Warwick after original artwork by Captain Brown.

The illustration comes from a popular science book containing a variety of articles on natural history, mechanics, astronomy, chemistry and a translation of Baron Cuvier’s influential work ‘The Animal kingdom’.

Editor William Macgillivray wanted to create an accessible science book with high quality steel engravings.
